Likelihood Based Inference for Monotone Response Models

چکیده

The behavior of maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) and the likelihood ratio statistic in a family of problems involving pointwise nonparametric estimation of a monotone function is studied. This class of problems differs radically from the usual parametric or semiparametric situations in that the MLE of the monotone function at a point converges to the truth at rate n (slower than the usual √ n rate) with a non-Gaussian limit distribution. A framework for likelihood based estimation of monotone functions is developed and limit theorems describing the behavior of the MLEs and the likelihood ratio statistic are established. In particular, the likelihood ratio statistic is found to be asymptotically pivotal with a limit distribution that is no longer χ but can be explicitly characterized in terms of a functional of Brownian motion. Applications of the main results are presented and potential extensions discussed.

Testing for the Monotone Likelihood Ratio Assumption

Monotonicity of the likelihood ratio for conditioned densities is a common technical assumption in economic models. But we have found no empirical tests for its plausibility. This paper develops such a test based on the theory of order-restricted inference, which is robust with respect to the correlation structure of the distributions being compared. We apply the test to study the technology re...

Empirical likelihood inference for the accelerated failure time model

Accelerated failure time (AFT) models are useful regression tools to study the association between a survival time and covariates. Semiparametric inference procedures have been proposed in an extensive literature. Among them, Fygenson and Ritov (1994) proposed an estimating equation which is monotone in the regression parameter and has some excellent properties. However, there exists a serious ...

Statistical Inference in Autoregressive Models with Non-negative Residuals

Normal residual is one of the usual assumptions of autoregressive models but in practice sometimes we are faced with non-negative residuals case. In this paper we consider some autoregressive models with non-negative residuals as competing models and we have derived the maximum likelihood estimators of parameters based on the modified approach and EM algorithm for the competing models. Also,...

Estimation of Smooth Link Functions in Monotone Response Models

We deal with the estimation of smooth link functions in a class of conditionally parametric models, of the covariate–response type. Independent and identically distributed observations are available from the distribution of (Z, X), where Z is a real– valued covariate with some unknown distribution, and the response X conditional on Z is distributed according to the density p(·, ψ(Z)), where p(·...
